Obituary for Milton Averill Hutchins

Milton Averill  Hutchins
Bar Harbor -- Milton Averill Hutchins, 92, died August 4, 2017 at his home. He was born June 27, 1925 in Milbridge the son of Roy G. and Lottie (West) Hutchins.

Milton was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a Coxswain on LCT-1263. He was a member of the American Legion Post and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Milton worked for many years for the State of Maine Highway Department, Harold MacQuinn Construction, Inc. and Cianbro as a foreman and in other positions. Milton also worked a few years for and retired from Dragon Cement.

In his younger years, Milt enjoyed dances at local granges and would walk many miles to work and visit friends.

He had many interests over the years, hunting, fishing, lobster fishing, tending his gardens which he shared with friends and family. Milt loved the Red Sox and the Patriots.

Milt married his beloved wife Daphne in 1980. They were married 36 years until her passing in July 2016. They spent 25 winters in Florida and developed good friendships lasting to this day. He took up golfing when in Florida.

Milt was always personable and welcoming to anyone who stopped by and enjoyed company. He would stop whatever he was doing to share a story and a laugh. He was a man of few words and as a friend said, “He said what he meant, and meant what he said”.

Milt braved white water rafting in his later 70’s, lobster fished to age 87, conquered cancer at 89, and tended his gardens to age 91.

Milton is survived by two sons, Thomas Hutchins and wife Brenda of Iowa, Samuel Hutchins and wife Sandy of California; daughters Suzie Cregan and husband Tom of Pennsylvania, and Judy Tucker and significant other Mike DiGangi of Ellsworth. Stepchildren Richard Higgins of Otter Creek, and Stephen Higgins and wife Kathleen of Windham. Grandchildren, Angie Hess and David, their children Jenson and Vivian, Nathan Hutchins and Leah, their children Landon and Emmerson, also Andre, Tanya, Timothy and Jasmine Hutchins, Amanda Merrell and JR, their children Amelia, Davian, and Kaitlyn, MaryAnn Heatherby and Josh and their son Logan, Justine Higgins and significant other Brian and daughter Aurelia, Brian Higgins, Jeremy Tucker and Karen, their children Tessa and Marshall, Jyl Tucker and fiance Andrey, Jay Tucker and his daughter Macie, and Jennifer Tucker. He is also survived by step-children Penny Mellish, Wayne Bragdon, Mary Wood and Linda Mason. Milt also leaves three close friends, Elizabeth Racicot, Donald Cote and Arthur “Sport” Fox, three nephews and a niece, and his cherished cat Patches. Along with his wife Daphne, he is predeceased by his siblings Bill, Helen and Kathryn.

Friends are invited to call 1-2 pm, Friday, August 11, 2017 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main Street, Mt. Desert where memorial services will follow at 2pm. Interment will be at Otter Creek Cemetery.
