Obituary for Wesley E. Reed

Wesley E. Reed
Winter Harbor and Southwest Harbor -- Wesley E. Reed, 91, died March 24, 2017, in Southwest Harbor. He was born October 30, 1925 in Southwest Harbor, the son of Howard Wesley and Minerva Louise (Mitchell) Reed.

Wes served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He joined at the end his junior year in high school, and after completing boot camp, he returned to Southwest Harbor to marry his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Minerva Knowles. The following day after the ceremony, he shipped out to serve overseas. Wes always took pride in being a veteran and serving his country during the War. Wes worked at Hinckley Yacht in Manset as a joiner for 25 years before he took over his father's position as captain on the yacht, The Venturer, and caretaker of the Maine and Florida estates for Harry Haskell. After 4 years, Wes returned to Hinckley Yacht for the next 16 years until his retirement. One of the great thrills of his later life was taking the trip to Washington DC with other veterans to visit the war memorials courtesy of Honor Flight. Escorted from Winter Harbor to Manchester, NH by the Wreaths Across America, American Heroes Racing, Maine Patriot Guard Riders and the New Hampshire Patriot Guard along the way was a memory he cherished. Wes was an active member of the American Legion Post #69 of Southwest Harbor. In the earlier years leading up to retirement, Wes was a ham radio operator and looked forward to the evenings and weekends talking to others near and far.

Wesley is survived by a daughter, Debra Sanner and husband, Walter "Bud" of Southwest Harbor; a sister, Carol Walsh of Trenton; a brother, Donald N. Reed and wife, Geri of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Jeffrey , Jillian, and Jarrett Sanner, Jacob Reed and Sarah (Reed) Hendricks; great-grandchildren, Caleb Miller and Kaylee Hendricks, Gabriel and baby sister Reed, Dominic Lunt; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Minerva (Knowles) Reed; sons Robert E. and Ronald L. Reed.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, April 1st, 9 am with a funeral service at 10 am at the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church, 29 High Rd, Southwest Harbor. A celebration of Wesley's life will be held in the church vestry following the ceremony. Spring interment will be at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.

Contributions in Wesley's memory may be made to the American Legion Post #69, Southwest Harbor.
