Obituary for Cyril E. "Bud" Johnson
Cyril “Bud” Johnson died peacefully on December 25 in his home in Pretty Marsh. He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on November 28, 1922.
After marrying his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Cameron, and starting college at Northeastern University, Bud became an officer in the Marine Corps in 1942 and was deployed to the Pacific theater until he was honorably discharged and retired from active service in 1948. He then finished college at Northeastern and went on to receive a master’s in chemical engineering from Villanova University. In the mid-1950’s, he moved his family to the western Maine town of Rumford to work for the Oxford Paper Company where he and Mary raised their five sons. Bud loved hiking the mountains of Maine, including week-long trips along the Appalachian Trail. He retired in 1974, planted a large grove of apple trees, managed a large raised-bed garden, and cut, split, and stacked 15 cord of wood a year on their 20 acres for nearly another 20 years. Most days included a hike up his beloved Glassface Mountain on adjoining trails that he cut directly from his property. In 1991 Bud began a new chapter of his life when he moved to Pretty Marsh and married Paulie Swan-Ferm. Paulie and Bud loved to hike the carriage roads and trails of Acadia and to cruise Blue Hill Bay aboard their 24 foot Ellis powerboat Mintaka. They enjoyed an active but quiet life and many happy years together. After Paulie passed away, Bud enjoyed and greatly appreciated the love and daily care from his stepson Bill Ferm and Bill’s wife Nin and son Dan and Dan’s wife Cindy.
Bud is survived by five sons, David, Doug, Dan and his wife Cindy, Don and his wife Diane, and Dale and his wife Nancy; stepson Bill and his wife Nin; stepdaughter Linnea and her husband John; stepson Robert; more than 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held later in 2017.
Bud was very proud of the work Dan and his staff do at the Acadia Family Center in Southwest Harbor and wished that any gifts in his memory be made to that organization.
