Obituary for Grenville B. Lloyd
Grenville B. Lloyd, Jr., 92, died at the Village at Summerville on October 31, 2016. He was born August 11, 1924, in Syracuse, New York, the son of Grenville B. Lloyd and Emma Reed Askin Lloyd.
After graduating from Yale University and the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources with a Master of Science degree, he was a Fulbright Scholar in Australia where he worked on watershed management problems in the Snowy Mountains. The majority of his life was dedicated to the management of America’s natural resources and its natural environment through a long career with the US Forest Service.
The last part of his life was focused on the more basic issue of human overpopulation in America and in the rest of the world. Another issue in which he invested much of his later life was that of man’s inhumanity to his fellow creatures, addressing many specific issues to correct that abuse. Hopefully, one day the United States, as the European Union has done, will enact national legislation to officially recognize nonhumans as sentient beings, i.e., capable of feeling pain and joy. Then, hopefully, our fellow creatures will be given greater respect for their feelings and treated more humanely. Hopefully, too, humans will soon learn to live in balance and harmony with the rest of life on earth. These two issues – the human population explosion and man’s inhumanity to his fellow creatures – became the central focus of Mr. Lloyd’s later years.
Mr. Lloyd enjoyed many years in Southwest Harbor, with his late wife, Grace Edwards Riddle Lloyd. He is survived by his sister, Hazel-Reed Lloyd Berry of Summerville, SC, nephews James Watkins Berry Jr. (Beth), Christopher Lloyd Berry (Rita), and niece Pamela Reed Berry-Kacpura (John).
Graveside services will be held at a later date in Mt. Heights Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. The family gratefully acknowledges the love and care given to Mr. Lloyd by Hospice of Charleston and the staff of the Village at Summerville, especially the nurses and nursing assistants of the PRIDE Unit.
