In Memory of Ben

Ben Adams was our very dear and beloved friend. Brought up in the traditions of the descendants of John Quincy Adams, he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. A handsome, unassuming man, he valued the opportunities and natural gifts he was given. Whether it was sailing the Sheepscot River under a full moon, leading his football team to victory or singing with his beautiful voice and playing piano by ear, he lived life to the fullest. Our long friendship with Ben began and ended with music. We became friends when Frank and Ben played in the band "Castle of Dreams". Opening night was exactly 40 years ago the night he died. We left him early in the evening with a CD playing music of the fifties. Troy told us that when the music stopped Ben died. We think he wanted it that way. In addition to being a great friend, we will be forever grateful to Ben for introducing us to the wonderful world of boatng. From joining the MDI Yacht Club as charter members along with his wife Nancy, to endless summer days on "Pemaquid" with his soulmate Barbarann, to weekend trips with Brigitte on his last boat "Lucy", we were blessed to learn from him and experience the wonder and beauty of being on the water. Boating and music were a big part of our friendship with Ben, but there was so much more. He and Barbarann were our closest friends. We did everything together. We were always at each other's homes having dinner, watching the Celtics or playing pool. We went out just about every weekend. We danced and played and even went on vacations together. Ben had a wonderful, quirky sense of humor so we were always laughing and having fun. There are so many wonderful memories. Ben's final years were made difficult by diabetes and dementia but he had moments of clarity, remembering the happiness he had known. On Christmas Day he told us that he had had a good life. He did. He was a prince of a man who lived his life with honor and grace. We are heartbroken and will miss him terribly, but we are so glad we had Ben in our lives. Our hearts go out to his family, especially his son Troy who has cared for him, and to his dear friend Brigitte who brought happiness and joy to his final years.
