Gloria O. Magruder, 83, died January 13, 2016 at her home in Manset with her spouse by her side. She succumbed to the complications from two major falls. She was born, April 16, 1932 in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the daughter of James H. and Claude (Bowers) Ozment Sr.,

Gloria graduated from Dyersburg High School in 1950. She received a B.S. in education at the University of Mississippi, then she acquired a M.S. Ed in counseling at the University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee. She taught junior high English and physical education for several years in Dyersburg. Later on, she went on to study the teachings of Carl Jung at the Einsiedeln Monastery in Switzerland. Gloria attended several retreats at Christ in the Desert Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico. As a result of her experiences in Pecos, she became a pastoral counselor, skillfully guiding her clients.

She was an enthusitatic member of the Causeway Club, she propelled her drives with a joyous “POW.” On one occasion, she benefited from a seagull advancing her ball considerably. Gloria was also a member of the flock of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor. She cherished her time with Susannah Jones, chauffeuring her from church to her home in Bernard. She enjoyed her trips to Venice, gazing out at the Grand Canal, and especially, zipping around in the elegant water taxi’s. Gloria adored her four cats; Nessie (unnecessary), Louise, Daisy and Matilda (she referred to them as “her babies”). Her lofty new home in Manset gave her great pleasure and pride.

Gloria is survived by her devoted spouse and partner of twenty-two years, Marcy MacKinnon from Southwest Harbor, her daughters, Claudia Magruder Featherstone and husband, Lynn, from Knoxville, TN., and Gloria Kate “Kay” Magruder and husband, Ken Vanskiver of Montrose, CO., her grandson, Kyle Magruder Hughes of Knoxville, TN., and her brother, Jere M. Ozment of Dyersburg, TN. She was a special “Nanny” to her grandson, Kyle Hughes.
She was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Doris O. Avison and her brothers, James H. Ozment Jr. and William F. Ozment.
