Obituary for Lawrence E. "Peenie" Murphy

Print
ELLSWORTH – Lawrence E. (Peenie) Murphy, 92, died after a brief illness November 13, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. He was born May 10, 1926, in Northeast Harbor, the eldest son of Walter H. and Marie E. (McEachern) Murphy.

Peenie served in the Army, World War II, during the 1945 Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe.

A tenacious entrepreneur, Peenie would proudly tell all that he was thrown out of the 8th grade at Pemetic Elementary and then later became a school board member and a town selectman. He was a generous provider to his family, and a local businessman operating gas stations, rental cars, taxis, fuel oil, snowmobiles sales, and shuttling cars north/south for the summer visitors. Peenie was always known to have a half-chewed cigar that rarely appeared to be lit. He was an avid golfer and long-time member of Kebo Valley and the Bar Harbor Golf Course. Belva and Peenie spent many winters in Spring Hill, Florida, where they golfed and enjoyed escaping the cold winters.

In 1973 Belva and Peenie were founding members creating MDI Helpers which later became Downeast Horizons, a non-profit organization that assists people with developmental disabilities.

Peenie is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Belva (Crockett) Murphy; his daughter Tina Barrett and her husband Monty, of Monroe; his daughter Sally Auclair and her husband Armand Jr., of Orono; his son Steve Murphy of Ellsworth; four grandchildren Heather Auclair-Welch of Dedham MA; Erik Hamilton of Scarborough; David Hamilton of Scarborough, and Melanie Knarr of Scottsdale AZ; two great grandchildren Nick and Grace Knarr of Scottsdale AZ; two brothers Forrest (Spide) Murphy of Southwest Harbor and Philip (Pete) Murphy of Trenton; and many nieces and nephews. Peenie is predeceased by his parents, his brother Clarence (Nibby) Murphy and brother Joseph (Joe) Murphy.

Friends are invited to call 12-2:00PM, Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert. Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Height Cemetery.

Gifts may be made to Downeast Horizons Foundation, 77 Union Street, Ellsworth ME 04605.
