Obituary for Kenneth Elmer "Mucker" Smith

Kenneth Elmer "Mucker" Smith
Bar Harbor -- Kenneth Elmer “Mucker” Smith, born March 14, 1930 in Bar Harbor, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2018. Born to parents Clarence and Mona (Goss) Smith, Ken was the youngest of six children.

After his graduation from Bar Harbor High School, Ken enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS William Rush during the Korean War. His service aboard the Rush took him around the world to many ports of call, including an arrival on Gibraltar in May, 1954, on the same day that Queen Elizabeth II arrived there.

Ken married Theresa Elizabeth Blais on December 8, 1951 at Portsmouth Naval Base. After the completion of his naval service they returned to
Bar Harbor to raise their family.

Ken believed in a days work for a days pay and often began his days at dawn. As his family grew, Ken worked at many jobs. He was a part of the construction crew that built the Bluenose Ferry Terminal and then a member of the docking crew when ferry service began. His time with the Bar Harbor Motor Company introduced him to many of the Island’s summer residents through chauffeur’s seeking car service. When a best friend’s family purchased a hotel that included a local watering hole, Ken found himself behind the bar of the Green Door and quickly became a favorite bartender to both locals and summer residents alike. Eventually Ken became custodian for Bar Harbor High School and when the new regional high school opened, wanting to stay in Bar Harbor, Ken went to the Connors Emerson Schools. “Mr. Smith” had many happy memories of generations of students and special teachers. After school he was often found in his garden or in winter at his ice tent on Eagle Lake.

Ken knew loss and hardship, losing his beloved sister Lib at an early age and his wife’s death from cancer at the young age of 44. His most significant challenge came following an industrial accident in 1989 when Ken was severely burned, forcing him into retirement. As he had with all his challenges Ken faced this one head on and with his strong work ethic and just got on with his life. As an early riser he enjoyed being the first to know and share the news of a day. His grandchildren will remember his love of a good story or a knock knock joke.

He is survived by Dale and Jody Smith, Kenneth and Stacey Smith, Ronald and Carol Smith, Glenn and Claudette Smith. Grandchildren Michael and Robyn Smith, Sara and Kevin Donnell, Lisbeth and Steve Sanborn, Caron and John Pisani, Sophia Smith and Jacob Smith. Great Grandchildren Guinevere Pelletier, Balin Pelletier, Emmet Pisani, Lauren Donnell and Sloane Sanborn.
Many nieces and nephews and his special friend, companion and confidant Dorothy Cooke.

Ken was predeceased by his siblings Elizabeth, Clarence, Helen, Merrill and Donald; his wife Theresa Elizabeth Blais; and granddaughter Theresa “Tes” Smith.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of his great granddaughter and Kushball partner, Sloane. Donations may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of New England, 114 Perimeter Road, Nashua, New Hampshire 03063.

Funeral services will be held 1PM, Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, 41 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor. Interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert.
