Obituary for Michael A. Majka

Print
OTIS - Michael A. Majka, D.O., 87, died peacefully on August 29 at an Ellsworth care facility. He was born June 12, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Michael Majka and Anna (Wysacka) Majka.

After graduating from Temple University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he chose to relocate to Maine where he could pursue his passion for outdoor sports while practicing Family Medicine in Orono for 38 years. During that time, he served terms as President of the Maine Osteopathic Association, President of the Bangor Medical Club and was awarded Family Physician of the Year by the MOA. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #66 in Orono, Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor and the Order of the Eastern Star in Old Town.

“Doc” never turned anyone away from his door, whether it was at the office, home or camp. He was available 24/7 to anyone in need and would often make house calls in the middle of the night. He gladly traded services with his patients, whether it be maintenance work on his home or office, a bag of fiddleheads or deer meat for the freezer. He spent many happy hours working in his vegetable and flower gardens, hunting in the Maine Woods and fishing year round, especially at the family camp at Beech Hill Pond. In his retirement, he took art classes and his watercolors adorn the walls of his beloved camp. In later years, when physical limitations prevented active pursuits, he became an avid reader devouring hundreds, if not thousands of books. His most important accomplishment was being a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather (“Dzia Dzia”).

Dr. Majka was predeceased by his two brothers, John and Frank Majka, and by his first wife, Constance A. (Murray) Majka. He is survived by his dear sister, Anna Mae Chmielewski of Bensalem, PA, his wife, Mary Lou (Robinson) Majka of Otis, his children, Jim (Linda) Majka of Windham, Mick Majka of Ellsworth, Andrea Majka (Nat Lewis) of Underhill Center, VT, Duane (Kathleen) Majka of Memphis, TN, Matthew (Paula) Shannon of Orono, Kate (Nate) Elser of Champion, OH, and finally, carrying on the tradition of Family Doctor is Erek Majka and his wife, Stephanie Streit of Las Vegas, NV. Rounding out the Majka clan are eleven beautiful and talented grandchildren and one precious great granddaughter.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Seaport Village, especially Physical Therapist Patrick Van Dessel who not only held up Mike’s body but his spirits as well, and Social Worker Brenda Beal who was always available to answer questions, offer suggestions and provide comfort and support to the family. We are also grateful for the outstanding services of Beacon Hospice, especially Jenna Dalton, CNA, who is God’s gift to dying patients.

At a time yet to be determined, the family will gather for a Celebration of Life and interment at Riverside Cemetery in Orono. In his honor, please hug your loved ones, tell them you love them and treat everyone who’s path you cross with kindness and respect.
