Obituary for Pauline May ""Poppy"" McEachern

Pauline May ""Poppy"" McEachern
Pauline (Thurston) McEachern, Tremont

Pauline “Poppy” May (Thurston) McEachern, 93, passed on July 15, 2018 at home, as she wished, surrounded by her family and their love. She was born May 10, 1925 in Tremont, the daughter of Fred Victor Thurston and Elfreida (Brown) Thurston, and lived in Tremont her entire life.

Pauline graduated from Pemetic High School in 1944. At Pemetic High she stepped up to the plate as a softball pitcher, was the yearbook editor, class president for several years and an Air Raid Warden for the coast watch during World War II. In 1946, she married Archie F. McEachern, following his return from military service. Their marriage was a true partnership for 54 years which included running the family business, McEachern and Hutchins, enjoyment of the family camp at Toddy Pond, and many exciting adventures traveling in foreign countries and motorhoming across the United States. While raising their children, she taught sunday school, brought them for swimming trips at Echo Lake, picked blueberries in the local fields, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a nurturing, selfless, optimist who had many varied interests in life, including reading, jigsaw puzzles (1000 piece only), gardening, needlepoint and cooking. She had an amazing memory and kept up with current events. How many 93 year olds know the marital status of Ed Sheeran? She loved her pets, cats and dogs alike. Young family members and close friends enjoyed her warm, comfortable lap, hugs and devotion.

Pauline is survived by her three children, Leslie McEachern, Molly (McEachern) Melrose and Carol McEachern-Murphy and their spouses Janet, John and Glenn; her grandchildren, Matthew McEachern and his wife Sarah, Shelley (McEachern) Mitchell and her husband Josh, Betsy (Melrose) Poulin and her husband Nathan, Paul Melrose, Andrew Melrose and his wife Cathy, and Kathleen Murphy whose unique good fortune was to live with her grandmother; her great-grandchildren Ashley and Lindsey McEachern, Jacob and Sam Mitchell, and Colin and MacKenzie Melrose; her nieces and nephews Bill Thurston, Kathy (Thurston) Thurnau, Paula (Thurston) Dunbar, Susie (Thurston) Douglas, Fred Richardson, and Julianne (Richardson) Rodick.

She was predeceased by her parents Fred and and Elfreida; husband Archie; siblings Louise Richardson, Eva Reed, Leslie Thurston; and niece Nancy Reed.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Height Cemetery, in Southwest Harbor, Thursday July 19, 2018 at 3:00 pm, where Pauline will join her husband. As a recognition of all the kind and compassionate support from Mount Desert Island Nursing Association, donations can be made to Mount Desert Nursing Association, PO Box 397, Northeast Harbor, Maine 04662.
