Obituary for Steven Oliver Swann

Swan’s Island -- Steven Oliver Swann, “Swanney” “Capt. Swann”, 68, died on May 7, 2018 at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor of a brain tumor. He was born December 23, 1949 in Portland, Maine, the son of Oliver W. and Josephine L. (Nelson) Swann.

Steve graduated from Portland High School, class of 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and served his country from 1968-1971. He was an Airdale in the U.S. Navy and trained in aviation school as a door gunner in the U.S. Army. After serving, Steve became an ABS with the U.S. Coast Guard and received his certification as a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer.

Steve worked as an assistant engineer on the island coastal waterways with his father. He owned his own boat and lobstered in the summer and worked as a Sanitation Engineer at Cabbage Patch in Florida during the winter.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post #348 in Florida, a member of the Navy Seal Museum and HAL-S Seawolf Association and a member of the Moose Lodge in Ellsworth. Steve had certifications as an advanced open water diver and parachute jumpster/tandem instructor.

Steve loved to fish, hike and camp. He loved lobstering on his boat and to travel and he bicycled from Maine to Florida. He was an adventurer and sailed his 9ft. sailboat from Swan’s Island to Old Orchard Beach. He was independent and a survivor. He was a very caring man with a generous heart and grandiose character.

He is survived by his mother, Josephine L. Swann of Swan’s Island, a daughter, Sunday Comeau and husband, John IV and two grandchildren, Athena and John V. of Rutland, MA. Two brothers; Terry Swann and wife, Carole of Springfield, MA. and Russell Swann and wife, Donna of Windham, a sister, Susan Sargent and husband, William of Trenton and many nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his father, Oliver W. Swann.

Friends are invited to call 5-7PM, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert, where a celebration of life will be held, 9:00AM, Friday, May 25, 2018. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swan’s Island following the service.
