The Rev. Richard G. "Dick" Shepherd
The Reverend Richard G. (Dick) Shepherd, 90, of Bar Harbor and Bernard, Maine died in Bar Harbor on April 7, 2018.

Born in Syracuse, New York, to Thomas and Elsbeth (Golder) Shepherd, Richard grew up in Elmira, NY where he graduated from Elmira Free Academy. He attended Cornell University, graduating with a degree in fine arts. After graduation, he moved New York City where he worked for Georg Jensen, Inc. While in New York City, he met his future wife, Ruth (Adams). He attended Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University graduating with masters’ degrees in Divinity and Sacred Theology.

In 1956, he was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. He was rector at Church of the Epiphany in Southbury, Connecticut and of the Parish of Trinity Church in Saugerties, New York. In Saugerties, he served on the Zoning Board, the Grist Mill Preservation Society, and the Lighthouse Preservation Committee. Both he and Ruth were active in Episcopal Marriage Encounter for more than 25 years.

In the late 1960s, he had the opportunity to spend a month on Mount Desert Island as a summer supply priest at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Seal Harbor. Doing this for three years, he and Ruth fell in love with the area and ultimately bought property and built a house in Bernard to which they retired in 1993. During retirement, he served as a supply priest as needed. He and Ruth were also active in Friends of Acadia. They also traveled extensively in England and Scotland.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth and great-grandson Devon Cameron Shepherd. He is survived by his daughter, Alexandra; his son, Christopher and wife Kathleen (Parent); his grand-daughters Ashley (Shepherd) Jackson and Courtney Shepherd (husband Douglas); and great-grandchildren Zoe Jackson and Duncan Shepherd.

The funeral service will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at St Saviour’s Episcopal Church. 41 Mt Desert St, Bar Harbor.
