Obituary for Robert John "Bob" Hylander

Robert John "Bob" Hylander
Trenton -- Robert (Bob) John Hylander passed away surrounded by his loving wife Nancy and family on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at a local hospital. Bob was born on October 22, 1924 in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Clarence and Doris Hylander.

Bob graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, New York. He entered the University of Arizona in September 1942 but left college to enlist in the Army and served in France and Belgium. Wounded twice, he was awarded the purple heart with an oak leaf cluster and several field medals. He was later awarded the French Legion of Honor in May 2008 at the age of 82.

Following Bob’s Honorable Discharge in December 1945, he attended the University of Maine in Orono and graduated with a degree in science and math in 1950. While in college, Bob met his future wife, Nancy Beverage. They married in 1949.

Bob and Nancy moved to Bar Harbor in 1955 with their three daughters, Bonnie, Sandy and Susan. Bob was a strong, quiet Renaissance Man who could do anything he set his mind to. Through the years he was a National Park ranger, a boat captain, a pilot of small planes and an aerial photographer. Bob taught high school science and math for 18 years. He earned his Master’s Degree in a science program for experienced teachers at the University of New Hampshire in 1968. For 20 years Bob and Nancy operated West Eden Antiques in Town Hill.

Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy. Together they enjoyed nearly 69 years of marriage. He is also survived by his three daughters and their families: Bonnie Hylander Brody and David Brody of Williamsville, New York; Sandra Hylander Collier and Stephen Collier of Surry, Maine; Susan Hylander Duncan and Christopher Duncan of Poughkeepsie, New York; six grandchildren: Rachel, Nathan, Martha, Peter, Kathryn and Rebecca; and three great-grandchildren: Jethro, Maiju and Seija. Bob was predeceased by his eldest grandson, Andrew Scott Collier, late of Surry, Maine.

At Bob and Nancy’s request there will be no formal services. There will be a private graveside service for Bob’s family at a later date.
