Obituary for Florent Emile "Tony" Baker

Florent Emile "Tony" Baker
Bar Harbor -- Florent “Tony” Baker, 93, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2018 at the Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Providence, RI after a brief illness.

Tony was born in Pawtucket, RI to the now late Emile and Alexina (Coté) Baker on August 9, 1924. He was also the step son of the late Eva Fountaine. He lived his early life in Pawtucket except for spending a few years at the orphanage in Woonsocket, RI after his mother Alexina died in Canada in 1929. Both his parents were originally from Quebec, Canada. After the Great Depression, his father remarried and relocated the family to North Attleboro in 1938. Tony found work at Sayles Dairy Farm as a youth during WWII, a job that he always said was his most favorite in his entire life. Farming and farm life was always near and dear to him.

In 1947, he married Rosemarie Caron of Plainville, where they made a home together on Belcher Street and raised their family. In 1965 they moved to Washington Street after their home was taken by eminent domain to build Route 495. For a time, he worked for Emile Baker and Son, plastering and learning the trade, a skill he used throughout his life.

Tony began his own pool company, Star Pools, in 1962, after working at Rudd Murray Pools. He and Rosemarie owned and operated Star Pools until they sold the company in 1977. At that time, they purchased a motel in Bar Harbor, the Belle Isle Motel. Together they operated the motel until they both retired in 2001. His work ethic at any job was extraordinary and his favorite saying was “no pain, no strain.” Tony and Rosemarie spent their winters in Florida, first at Boynton Beach and then at Umatilla, making many friends all along the way on their lifelong journey.

Tony is survived by his son Gerald and his wife Beverly, of Rehoboth, MA and daughters, Jacki Baker and her husband Ron Mancini of Manchester Center, VT, Denise Estey and her husband Steve of South Dennis, MA, along with six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by a cherished cousin, Doris Pino of Burrillville, RI and his sister in laws, Helene Baker of Ellsworth and Teresa Baker of Bar Harbor and a dear friend and brother in law, Joseph Santoro of North Attleboro, MA. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosemarie, two brothers, Paul Baker and Ronald Baker, and a sister, Mary Jane Poulos.

Friends are invited to call 2:00-4:00PM, Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert. Funeral services will be held 10:00AM, Monday, March 12, 2018 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 21 Ledgelawn Ave., Bar Harbor with a reception to follow. Funeral services and burial will be at Knollwood Memorial Park in Sharon, MA on Tuesday, March 13, at 1:00PM.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 in Tony’s memory.
