Sarah L. (Sally) Hayward, born May 13, 1924, died at home February 20, 2018. Born in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Edward H. and Sarah L. Smith. She was predeceased by her husband Walter S. Hayward, whom she met in her teens while summering in Southwest Harbor. Sally grew up in Westfield, NJ, graduating from Westfield High School. She attended Wellesley College for two years before marriage. After many years of living in New Jersey, she and Walt retired to Beech Hill in the town of Mount Desert, in 1986. She was an active volunteer for the Arcady Music Festival, arranging housing for visiting musicians. She had, in her words, “a good, long life.”

Sally is survived by daughter Linda and her husband, Steve Weinreich; her son, Tom and his wife Susan; grandchildren Jamie Hayward and Abby Kimball, and three great-grandsons.

Sally read voraciously in her last years. Donations in her memory may be made to the Southwest Harbor Public Library, PO Box 157, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
