Obituary for Grace Poulin

Grace Poulin
Grace Downey Poulin, 89, passed away on January 16, 2018. Grace was born on March 23, 1928 in Ellsworth, ME, the daughter of Michael Edward and Bernice (Eldridge) Downey. Her final weeks were spent with her eight surviving children, many of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Grace was a very special person who was kind to everyone she met; she lived a life true to her faith and in her own words "lived a wonderful life".
She was graduated from Ellsworth High School, class of 1945. She attended and was graduated from Farmington State Teacher’s College in 1949. It was there she met her husband to be; Lawrence Earl Poulin. They were married June 25, 1949 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth and were married for almost 65 years. They spent most of their married life in Ellsworth, raising their family at 10 Liberty Street. They enjoyed traveling together on many camping trips across the United States and Canada for family vacations. They also enjoyed visiting their 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren in many towns and states to watch them play in youth sports, music concerts and other events. Grace taught braille to visually impaired students for 22 years in Hancock and Washington Counties. She travelled to Portland on weekends to receive her training in Braille from a Catholic nun. Grace was a devoted parishioner at St. Joseph’s parish for almost 70 years, serving in any capacity needed and in many ministries. She made special friends as she and Larry ministered to couples entering the sacrament of marriage. She served on the Women's Council, Loaves and Fishes food pantry, was a religious education teacher, a Eucharistic Minister, a lector, a member of the Parish Council and served in many other ways and in every event over the years. If she wasn't with her family, at work, or attending a sports event; she was probably at St. Joseph's helping someone. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the 4H program, and Friends in Action. She always welcomed the children of the Bridge Hill neighborhood into her home. She was ever-present at her children’s and grandchildren’s sports events. She enjoyed watching sports of any kind even at the high school when all of her children and grandchildren had graduated. She loved spending summers living at the family camp on Patten Pond all of her life.
Grace and Larry were the proud parents of 9 children. They were predeceased by daughter, Teresa Bernadette (Poulin) Kane. Grace was also predeceased by her husband, Larry. She is survived by children: Gerald, “Jerry” Poulin and wife Brenda of Eddington, children: Thomas, Mark, Danielle, Jenny; John Poulin and partner, Karen White of Holly Ridge, NC, his son Jeremy; Barbara (Poulin) Johnson and husband Rick, of Indianapolis, IN, children: Heather and Cory; the late Teresa Poulin Kane's husband Gregory, of Corinna, children: Andrea, Chris and Ty; Brian Poulin and wife April, of Holden, children: Amanda and Travis; Keith Poulin and wife, Susan, of Belchertown, MA, children: Scott and Michael; Gail (Poulin) Maddocks-Bennoch and husband Richard, of Ellsworth, children: Cindy, Michelle and Raymond; Allyson (Poulin) Sweeney and husband Michael of Greenwood, IN; children: Amy, Shelby, Alyssa and Seamus; Janis (Poulin) Whitney and husband Patrick, of Jonesboro, children: Rebecca and Kate.
