Obituary for Duane Emmons Smith
Town Hill -- Duane Emmons Smith, 71, died at his home January 9, 2018. He was born in Bar Harbor, January 16, 1946, the son of Clarence Llewellyn and Marie Francis (Carr) Smith.
He grew up in Northeast Harbor working at the Azalea and Thuya Gardens, delivering groceries for the Pine Tree Market, and working as a caddy at the golf club. During his high school years, Duane was a basketball star as well as serving on the Student Council. He then attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute where he studied engineering. Duane proudly served as a military policeman during the Vietnam War years both in the US and South Korea. While there he met his wife, Chong Hui Kim known as Kim. In 1969 they moved to Northeast Harbor where they subsequently had two daughters, Lana and Tina, the loves of his life. For several years Duane was an engineer on large yachts, first for Fitz Eugene Dixon of Winter Harbor and then for other owners. On his return to MDI he was employed by Hinckley Yachts, first as an engineer, and then as a boat carpenter for almost three decades. In the nineties Duane’s love of music, particularly, blues and ballads, led him to WERU where he volunteered as a programmer for several years. Next an opportunity came to go fishing and adventuring with his dear friend, Dave Beal on the 45 foot Jarvis Newman “Sea State” for which he was very grateful. Wood working, fishing and cooking were lifelong passions, but his daughters and three grandchildren, Shane 16, Elizabeth 13 and Ryan 11 brought him the most joy.
His gentle kind spirit, storytelling and good humor will be greatly missed by his many friends and especially his extended family of aunts, uncle, cousins and special friend Lee. May the Lord bless him.
A memorial service will be planned for spring.
