Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Jordan (LaFlamme)

Hancock -- Mary Elizabeth Jordan, 83, passed away peacefully at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth November 30th, 2017. She was born March 31, 1934 in Newton, Massachusetts, the only child of J. Kenneth and Mabel LaFlamme.

She attended the University of Maine, Orono for an undergraduate degree in early childhood education, and University of Connecticut for a Masters degree in Education. She was employed as a school teacher in Lexington, Massachusetts and Bangor prior to becoming a devoted mother and homemaker. She was married, August 28th 1965 to Glendon B. Jordan. They resided in Machias, Camden, and Hancock. Glendon passed in 1995. Mary greatly enjoyed her life and many friends in Hancock, and lived there until her passing.

Mary was active in the Union Congregational Church of Hancock as well as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth. She was a long time member of the Hancock Woman's club. She very much enjoyed her leadership role in the Downeast Senior College. She had a great love of books and written resources and as such, was a regular visitor to the Ellsworth Public Library. A favorite hobby was yard and garage sale hunting, where she enthusiastically sought out precious bargains and collectables. Little brought her more joy than coming home on Saturday mornings with a car full of treasures. Music was a lifelong passion of hers and she was a talented pianist, loving to sing and play with family and friends. She was also a noted glockenspiel player during her college days and beyond. She enjoyed her pet dogs and cats, as well as observing the birds she fed and other wildlife around the house. By far her greatest love, interest, and hobby was her family, whom she selflessly cared for throughout her life.

She is survived by her son Scott S. Jordan, who resided with her and cared for her until her death, as well as son Mark K. and Julie C. Jordan of Cincinnati, Ohio, and son Christopher G. and Sarah J.C. Jordan of Otis. She has 5 grandchildren, Bryce M. Conner of Austin,Texas, Timothy N., Madeline G., Isabella K., and Tyler M. Jordan of Cincinnati, Ohio.

A warm and special thank you to Mary’s friend and caregiver Lisa Dauphinee who brought kindness, ice cream, and yard sale filled adventures to her final months.

A spring burial service is planned for Mary to be laid to rest with Glendon in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the Ellsworth Public Library, 20 State St., Ellsworth 04605 or the Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane., Cherryfield 04622.
