Obituary for Margaret E. "Sue" Thornbury PhD

Margaret E. "Sue" Thornbury PhD
Mount Desert Island, ME and Marlborough, MA -- Dr. Margaret E. Thornbury, 95, died Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at her residence in Bar Harbor, ME. She was born on November 7, 1922 in Java Center, New York in Wyoming County and was raised on the family farm as the younger daughter of James R. and Mary E. (Hyland) Thornbury.

During her high school years, she assumed the responsibilities of the home along with caring for her sick mother and taking care of her father and uncle, Frank Thornbury. In 1950 ten years after high school graduation, Margaret entered Oneonta College in Oneonta, NY as a non-traditional student and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree. After a year teaching high school in Watertown, NY, Margaret entered Ohio State University where she earned her Masters and PhD degrees.

Dr. Thornbury joined the faculty at the University of Maine in 1962 teaching nutrition in the Department of Home Economics and became Dean of the School. After her retirement in 1981, she taught for two years at Simmons College in Boston before finally retiring from a successful and rewarding career in education.

Dr. Thornbury’s move to Marlborough, MA led to an active retirement volunteering at Marlborough Hospital for over 20 years, working on the board of St. Matthias Catholic Church, and socializing with new and older friends. During her years in Marlborough, she satisfied a desire to travel seeing Haiti, Russia, and several trips to Europe. Through this all, Dr. Thornbury was valued by her friends and family, and kept in contact with her classmates from high school, Ohio State, U of Maine, and colleagues from across the country.

Dr. Thornbury is survived by her nephew, David Prentice of New York, NY and her cousin, Michael Thornbury of Cottonwood, AZ. and will be missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her beloved sister Mary Prentice in 1981.

Friends are invited to call 10-11 am, Friday, December 1, 2017 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 5 Ocean House Hill Rd., Manset, ME where a Mass of Christen burial will follow with Father John Skehan as Celebrant. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Java Center, New York.

Those who desire may make contributions in Margaret’s memory to the animal shelter of your choice or Habitat for Humanity.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main Street, Mt. Desert, ME.
