Obituary for Abby Ryan

Abby Ryan
Blue Hill
Abby Keebler Ryan died November 22, 2017 at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. Born on May 10th, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ, Abby was the beloved wife of Arthur Marsh Ryan.

Abby was always active in the community wherever she lived, believing strongly in the importance of giving back. She was a docent for various museums, a member of the Junior League, and sat on several social service boards in Toledo OH, Columbus IN and Philadelphia. Locally, she was a member of the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Advancement Committee and Community Advisory Committee, and volunteered at the Tree of Life. Abby and Art have been active members of Church wherever they have lived, including the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill. Her sense of service and commitment was imparted to all of her children.

Abby worked for Planned Parenthood of Greater Philadelphia for many years as the head of development. After leaving Planned Parenthood she established a small consultancy in Philadelphia to assist NFPs with grant writing and development. She was deeply committed to women’s health and independence, and a strong supporter of policies and programs to advance those goals.

Abby was an avid tennis player throughout her life. She loved listening to classical music and visiting art museums. She always had flowering plants nearby, particularly the orchids that grew so well for her. Wellesley College, her alma mater, was part of her life. Abby was devoted to her family and friends and her 66-year partnership with her husband, Art.

Surviving her are her husband, Arthur M. Ryan; her children, Judy Ryan and husband Michael Higgins, granddaughter Abby Rogers and husband Scott Rogers, and great granddaughter Daisy Lee Rogers; Philip Ryan and his wife Elizabeth Ryan, their children Stuart Ryan and wife Erin Bond, Charlotte Ryan and Perry Ryan; and daughter Ruth Ryan.

A service to celebrate Abby’s life will be held in the spring of 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Abby Keebler Ryan Fund for Girls and Women at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, 57 Water Street, Blue Hill, 04614.
