Obituary for Richard W. "Sam" Carr

Richard W.  "Sam"  Carr
Ellsworth - Richard W. “Sam” Carr, 82, died peacefully with his wife by his side on September 27, 2017 at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born December 21, 1934 in Ellsworth, the son of William J. and Mildred (Moore) Carr.

Sam graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1958-1960. He worked for the U S Postal Service for many years and retired as postmaster in Surry in 1992.

He was active in many organizations; he was a 42 year member of the Ellsworth Lions Club and served twice as King Lion and as secretary, was a charter member of the Ellsworth Snowmobile Club, and member of Franklin Veterans Club. His Masonic affiliations included membership in Lygonia Lodge #40, Anah Shrine, Anah Convertible Unit which he served as both secretary and director, member of R.O.J. Court #150, the 100 Million Dollar Club of Anah Shrine and the Hancock County Shrine Club.

Throughout his life Sam enjoyed camping at George’s Pond, hunting and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed making toys and small furniture in his woodworking shop.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Agnes Dolliver Carr of Ellsworth; daughter, Pamela Browne of Virginia Beach, VA; son, Thomas Carr and wife Susan of Standish; grandson, Ryan Hesler and wife Kira of Millington, TN; granddaughter, Sarah Hesler of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, Robert Carr and wife Mary Lou of York Harbor; 2 nieces; and 2 nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours will be held 5:00-7:00 pm, Monday, October 2, 2017 with a Masonic Service at 6:30 pm at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. A memorial service will be held 10:00 am, Tuesday, October 3rd at the funeral home with a reception to follow the service. Private interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery.
