Rachel Krevans, 60, of Somesville, Maine and Inverness, California died peacefully on July 19, 2017 with her family around her. She spent her last days in the home she lovingly redesigned at the head of Somes Sound across the harbor from the family cabin. Friends and family will miss her generosity, her fierce intelligence, and her joy in life.

Rachel was an internationally renowned intellectual property attorney. After her BA at Dartmouth (1979) she spent several years in Alaska before earning her law degree at UC Davis (1984), graduating first in her class. Following a clerkship in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, she joined Morrison Foerster LLP (MoFo), eventually rising to chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. Her most notable cases involved complex interpretations of patent law as applied to new technologies, including smartphones (yes, Apple vs. Samsung), biosimilars, and new plant varieties— her last case before she died was on behalf of the strawberry program at her alma mater UC Davis. Along with her corporate work she took on numerous pro bono projects, including advocacy for AIDS patients. Her work brought her many honors, including the ChIPs Hall of Fame award and a cover story in American Lawyer. She was a strong advocate for diversity in corporate law and mentored many younger attorneys. Her cross-examinations were the terror of opposing counsel, and her passion and instinct for the telling detail were legendary.

She brought that same passion to her many hobbies and avocations. She enjoyed traveling to experience new places, old buildings (especially cloisters!), and interesting cuisine but most of all she loved hosting friends and family at the houses in Inverness and Somesville—serving them food from her own garden. When Rachel invited you for a simple brunch of yogurt, bagels and bacon she had made all of it from scratch, including the bacon.

Rachel loved her family, and her favorite role was as the super-aunt. She found passions to share with all of her nieces and nephews: taking in opera in Paris and Chicago; hosting sailors in San Francisco for the Youth America's Cup; making bacon; fall trips to Alisal Ranch; wading thigh-deep in the mud in the bay at Inverness. She traveled frequently for work but was always happy to organize trips with siblings and parents as well.

Somesville was one of her favorite places in the world. Rachel began coming to the Island as a small child when her father Julie taught summer genetics classes at the Jackson Lab. She realized one of her lifelong ambitions when she acquired her house on the harbor in Somesville next door to her sister Sarah and Sarah's husband Will. Conveniently, her second lifelong ambition (along with Sarah) was to become a pie lady—and the Somesville Union Meeting House welcomed them both as helpers for the famous Wednesday pie bakes.

Rachel was preceded in death by her father Julius and survived by her mother Patricia (Abrams) of Hulls Cove, her siblings Nita of Minneapolis, MN, JR and his wife Mary of Bar Harbor, Sarah and her husband Will Brieger of Sacramento, CA and Somesville, and Nora of Portland ME as well as her seven nieces and nephews: Martina, Kate, Solomon, John, Sophia, Aaron, and Leah.
