Dorothy Althea (Robinson) Worcester passed away peacefully at home on February 3, 2017. A descendent of James Richardson, an early settler of MDI, she was born January 30, 1925 the second daughter of Byron L. and Mary Brown Robinson.
She graduated from Pemetic High School and later attended UNH. She then studied in Boston at New England Deaconess Hospital where she graduated as a R.N.
Dorothy married Warren R. Worcester in March 16, 1947 after his return from combat in the Pacific. They lived in Bar Harbor for several years where she worked at MDI Hospital and Warren was employed at the Southwest Harbor Post Office. Dottie worked in the Operating Room and was the first nurse in the Recovery Unit when it first opened. Over 30 years she provided nursing services in a variety of settings. At one time, she traveled to Swan’s Island Clinic in all kinds of weather on Saturdays to assist a doctor and recalls being treated to tasty cinnamon rolls and coffee by grateful residents. At another point, she was involved with Lahey Clinic patients. She remembered children asking her to be with them during surgery. Dottie was also active with the Ambulance Service for years and had great admiration for all those in healthcare.
Beyond her nursing career Dottie was involved in many areas of the community. She was a member and deacon of the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church where her forebears signed the covenant more than 200 years ago. She was a member of the Christian Education and Bi-Centennial Committees and the choir. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eugene M. Norwood Post #69. She enjoyed her work as Girls State Senior Counselor for two years at Husson College. She sang with the Bristol Singers raising funds for many organizations on MDI. Another of her many interests was creating hooked rugs which are admired by many fiber arts enthusiasts. Reading, writing, and poetry were important to her since childhood and she spent many hours writing both poetry and fiction and loved being a part of various writing groups.
Dottie is survived by Warren, her beloved husband of nearly 70 years, son Duane, of Georgia, sister Elsie Frost of Brewer, several nephews and nieces, including Vanessa Allen, of Naples, Florida, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Hilda Robinson, Agnes Allen, and Mary Robinson, as well as an infant daughter.
Many thanks to hospice and others who have given care and comfort to both Dottie and Warren in recent months.
A service of remembrance will be held at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home in Somesville at 10am on Friday, February 10, 2017. If desired, memorial gifts may be given to a charity of your choice.
