Obituary for Charles S. Zayic

Charles Stephen Zayic, 90, died September 30, 2014 in Bangor. He was born December 30, 1923 in Belleville, IL, son of Charles John and Augusta Henrietta (Switala) Zayic.

Charles served in the US Navy during WWII from 1942-1947. He was assigned to the USS Corregidor, a Casablanca class escort carrier. After discharge from the service, he worked at the St. Louis Railroad where he met and married Flora Lee Wittmeyee, they were married for 68 years. He went to college evenings and received his BA in accounting. After their early years, they moved to Maywood, NJ and lived from 1954-1981. Upon retirement they moved to Maine where they had a vacation home on Green Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Flora: daughter, Sandra Cardascia and husband Fred of Montvale, NJ; grandson, Michael Cardascia of NYC, NY; and granddaughter, Lisa Cardascia of Norwood, NJ. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Ann Zayic on October 28, 1989.
A memorial mass will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at St. Joseph Church, 231 Main St. Ellsworth. Interment will be at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta at a later date.
