Douglas M. Norwood, 85, died January 23, 2012 at his home at Birch Bay Village. He was born July 24, 1926, the son of Milton Webster and Meda (Dunton)Norwood
Doug grew up in the Southwest Harbor community. He graduated from Pemetic High School in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army,training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He went to Pisa, Italy, where he served at the Prisoner of War Information Bureau. German prisoners captured in North Africa and Southern Italy were interned in Pisa before being sent by rail back to Germany.
After returning to the States, he was discharged from the service. He went to Aurora University in Illinois where he graduated in 1951. He moved to Boston where he worked for the investment brokerage company of Goodbody & Company. In 1954, he left the brokerage company to begin studies at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, preparing to enter the priesthood of the Episcopal Church.
In the spring of 1957, he was ordained a deacon. The following year, he was ordained to the Priesthood by the Rt. Rev. Walter M. Higley at Black River, New York, in the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York. His ministry included time spent in Black River, at Calvary Church in Syracuse, and as Chaplain at Willard State Hospital on Seneca Lake. In 1969, he moved to New York City to work for the Presbyterian Ministers’ Fund, while serving on Sundays at many Episcopal Churches in the Diocese of New York.
Eight years were spent in Brooklyn, New York, working as Assistant Director at the Sephardic Home For the Aged, a Jewish Institution. He spent time at All Saints Episcopal Church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, as a nonstipenary pastor. His last years of ministry before retiring in 1990 were spent in the position of Priest-In-Charge of the Church of The Holy Spirit in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
In 2001, Doug moved back to Southwest Harbor from New York City where he had lived for thirty-two years. His body will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in the spring in the family plot at Brookside Cemetery in Somesville.
Doug was predeceased by his wife Audrey and by a sister, Phyllis Norwood.
A memorial service will be held at Church of Our Father in Hulls Cove , 11:00 a.m., February 18, 2012.
