Obituary for Harold William Younghans (Hal)
MOUNT DESERT — Harold (Hal) William Younghans, 85, passed away March 15, 2010 after a lengthy illness at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lake City, Fla. Hal was born July 19, 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and lived in Maine, Massachusetts and New Jersey before moving to Florida.He was a 50-year member and past master of the Masons’ Washington Lodge 37AF+AM, a member of the Anah Temple Shrine of Maine and the VFW.
Hal served proudly in the U.S. Army and was a life member of the Second Indianhead Division serving during World War II, landing on Omaha Beach and earning the Bronze Star and five battle stars through France, Germany and Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. His battles include D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of St. Lo, Black Forest Campaign, and the Liberation of Pilsen. He was decorated by the French Government for his participation in the liberation of France.
Hal is survived by his wife Margaret “Peggy” Younghans of Lake City, Fla. whom he married March 2, 1974. Also surviving are his children and grandchildren: son John Younghans of Madison, Ala.; daughters Linda Harrison of Canton, Ohio and Karen Perry of Dartmouth, Mass.; nine grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren; and several stepchildren, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Hal’s wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service with full military honors, was held at the Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Lake City, Fla. Burial with full military honors will take place at a later date in Mount Desert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hal’s name to the Shriners Hospital c/o Anah Shriners, P.O. Box 735, Bangor ME 04462. The family would like to sincerely thank the care givers at the VA hospital in Lake City at Serenity Place for their kindness and loving care of Hal during his illness
